Being A Volunteer
When I was in school, I used to walk past panhandlers who would hang
around the old downtown post office. Some of these people would
just break your heart. As I struggled for pocket change, I felt torn
between a desire to help and a fear of being taken advantage of.
Once I started working, I decided to set up a monthly paycheque
deduction to donate to the United Way. Now, I could walk past these
panhandlers, secure in the knowledge that I was helping. With my
donation, I helped provide services that were needed – services
like Living Rock (helping street youth), Mission
Services (shelter,
food and clothing) and St.
Matthew's House (food bank).
Though there are a lot of good charities out there, but what I
really like about the United Way is the way they direct my donations
to agency programs that make a real difference. I also like the
fact that my money is helping entire communities – not just one
person or one family.
After a few years of donating, I decided to
volunteer a few hours per week by serving on the McMaster
United Way Campaign.
This has been a fantastic experience.
You get to work with some of
the most talented and motivated individuals at McMaster University.
These are people who want to be here, who feel passionate about
what they are doing, and who bring a rich range of experiences
and knowledge to the effort.
You also get this wonderful opportunity
to challenge yourself and to use skills that may not be found in
your current job.
Third, you get the opportunity to meet some very
interesting people from all walks of life: Mayors, CEO’s, Labour
Leaders and Community activists. I particularly enjoy hearing about
what other people are trying to achieve at work and in the community.
It gives you a wonderful new perspective on your job, your work
and your relationship to the cities of Hamilton and Burlington.
Finally,
you get to work with United Way staff, who are some of the most
dedicated and positive people I have ever met. They have so much
energy and drive.
What more could one ask for than to work with people
who are really trying to make Hamilton and Burlington a better
place to live and work.
Not a bad way to spend a few hours per week.
